Artist Statement
My work explores the meeting point of painting, photography, memory, and place. Based in Prince Edward Island, I draw on lived experience—extreme weather, migration, family life, and hockey—to build images that carry tension, movement, and atmosphere. Working across oil painting, Chinese ink, cyanotype, printmaking, and installation, I use medium as a way to deepen meaning rather than as an end in itself.
Biography
Xin Liu (Leo) is a Prince Edward Island–based artist originally from China. He graduated from Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Oil Painting. His practice brings together painting, Chinese ink, cyanotype, printmaking, and installation, often drawing on climate, migration, family life, and hockey as visual and conceptual sources.
Recent projects include The Story of Fiona (2023), a body of work shaped by the impact of Hurricane Fiona in PEI, and Jie Qi’s Dragon (2024), an interdisciplinary project connecting traditional Chinese solar terms with climate awareness, community participation, and local cultural life. In recent years, he has also developed Blue Hockey, a series in which painting and photography meet through hockey, ink, cyanotype, and light.
