Artist Statement

Let curiosity lead. I believe knowledge and experience are obtained not only through formal education but by learning hands-on via our willingness to experience life.

Biography

Welcome! My name is Jena White (BMus) and I have been a working artist since the 1990s and a child performer before that.

My experience on Prince Edward Island dates to late 2019 when I relocated with my family to my husband's home province.

My background reads like a treasure map because I have not taken a direct path to arrive at my current practice of art direction/production design. I do not possess a formal degree in visual art, film or theatre. Rather I have been blessed to be mentored by several Canadian professionals training on productions in those very disciplines through the years and have worked as a design assistant in the areas of visual merchandising, floral design and interior design.

Three important things to know about me and my practice:

  1. I am a gender-based violence and intimate partner violence survivor. A tragic attack in my twenties set back my career goals and delayed my journey. I have been working to regain the ground lost at a time when the pandemic, various strikes and funding are major issues to all creatives.
  2. I am from a mixed-race family of origin. I strive for equitable representation and inclusion in personal and professional areas.
  3. I am a working parent who prioritizes career and family. I believe that both can be satisfying and neither need be sacrificed.
