Artist Statement
My work reflects a longstanding interest in art, design, and visual culture, particularly Asian painting, printmaking, sculpture, folk art, and decorative traditions. I draw inspiration from their craftsmanship, intricate details, and distinctive forms, as well as from contemporary art and popular culture. Working digitally, I explore stylized forms, elaborate patterns, and detailed textures while drawing on traditional aesthetics. Curiosity, an appreciation for craftsmanship, and the simple pleasure of making art guide my practice.
Biography
I'm a Canadian visual artist living and working in Prince Edward Island. I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts and have a professional background spanning illustration, publishing, video game production, and commercial design. Over the years, I've worked on a wide range of creative projects, including multimedia and interactive entertainment projects associated with companies such as Six Flags, A&E, and National Geographic. My illustration work has appeared in several art anthologies published by Out of Step Books, as well as on book covers, music releases, and other commercial projects. I've also been involved extensively in children's book publishing, often collaborating with my wife, Christina Patterson, an artist and illustrator. Together, we've created several illustrated books, including Fairies on My Island, The Pup From Away, The Little Cracked Pot, Cute Food, Monster Babies, and Baby Fairies in My Garden. I've also written and illustrated The ABCs of Skateboarding Animals and illustrated Patti Larsen's Owen's Pirate Adventure. Acorn Press published several of these titles, while others were independently produced. My current focus is on developing my contemporary art practice.
