Biography
Hi, I’m Shaun Patterson,
I'm a portrait artist exploring identity and culture through contemporary media, aiming to connect diverse narratives. Born and raised in Southern Ontario, and currently living on Prince Edward Island with my wife, Christina.
I hold a BFA in Art History from NSCAD University, an MBA from the University of Prince Edward Island, and an LLM (Master of Laws) from Osgoode Hall Law School.
My work explores themes of identity and culture, reflecting my multicultural background and encouraging viewers to consider their own cultural narratives.
I create pieces blending modern portraiture with cultural motifs, inspired by textiles, patterns, and ornamentation from diverse traditions. From the replication of Japanese Ukiyo-e compositions and pan-Asian pattern work to pop culture media figures and the use of branded pattern signifiers. I want my work to feel both new and traditional at the same time.
Above all, I am a lifelong learner. I am happiest sitting in a comfortable chair with a strong black coffee, working my way through the latest stack of unread books.
