Artist Statement
I want my canvas to burst with the same vibrance and energy as the Canadian landscape.
Born and raised in Ontario, my journey across both coasts of Canada has deeply influenced my artistic vision. Driven by a desire to evoke a sense of place and nostalgia while capturing the wild beauty of my surroundings, vivid and intense colours bring these moments to life, reminding viewers of fond experiences of places they've cherished.
Through my work I celebrate the untamed beauty of Canada and invite you to feel connected to these extraordinary places.
Biography
Cynthia Gunsinger is a Canadian visual artist known for her bold and vibrant landscapes that evoke a deep sense of place and memory. Her work invites viewers to reconnect with fond remembrances of places they’ve loved being. Now rooted in Cornwall, Prince Edward Island, Cynthia's inspiration is the untamed beauty of the Canadian landscape and translating its energy and emotion into colour and form.
A lifelong maker and crafter, Cynthia's creative journey as an adult began with abstract multimedia art in a corner of her basement in downtown Toronto after a chemistry altering trip to Squam Art Workshops.
Over time, her focus has shifted primarily to acrylic painting. Her unique style, influenced by the Expressionist, Impressionist, and Pointillist movements, reflects an obsession with colour, shape, and emotion and how they form in an image in our memory.
As Programming and Event Manager of the 40th Anniversary Conference of ArtsBC, Community Engagement Coordinator for Arts Council of the Central Okanagan, and the Executive Secretary of Digital Okanagan, Cynthia has elevated and empowered her creative and tech community.
One of Cynthia's core values in her creative practice is the importance of contributing to building a strong and resilient creative economy and she also strongly believes arts work is work.
